Bio: The first time I heard the name Iron and Wine was late last year when a good friend recommended them to me. I thought I would give them a listen and decided they were worthy of a review as well as downloading from iTunes. Iron and Wine is the Stage name of singer-songwriter Sam Beam. He has already released three studio albums and even a live album, so I am coming to him a bit late in the day and you could hardly call him new, he has been recording since 2002. All that said he is new to me so I figured what the hell. Along with the albums there are several EPs all available on iTunes and other good sites. He has even a song featured on the sound track for Zack Braff movie Garden State. Raised in South Carolina he now resides in Austin Texas. His stage name comes from a dietary supplement magazine called 'Beef, Iron and Wine'. The former University lecture's career took off when some demos he had made got into the hands of the owners of US indi label Sub Pop (label of The Shins) they personally got in touch with him and signed him up. The rest I have told you. He has been compared to the likes of Nick Drake, Simon and Garfunkel, Neil Young and Elliot Smith. ![]() Foto:Kim Black/Mit freundlicher Genehmigung von Sub Pop Now for my review of the first four songs he decided to put on MySpace... (Anmerkung: Aktuell sind auf der Iron and Wine Myspace-Seite weitere Songs enthalten) Track 1 Love Song of The Buzzard (live) (plays: 207,905) After some initial guitar plucking the song drifts into a sound akin to The Verve (UK). The lyrics though are far more psychedelic than that. The singing here reminds me of Neil Young's Laurel Canyon sound. I love the electric guitar playing on this smooth sounding song. Really beautiful lyrics too! Track 2: On Your Wings (live) (70,044) This chilled out song begins with a whopping minute long intro on guitar and xylophone before drifting into relaxed singing. This song reminds me a bit of Wilco. The vocals are well controlled and smooth. The song has great production values. It is the kind of track that gets into your head and doesn't want to leave. Great melody. Track 3: House By The Sea (live) (54,446). An electronic sound breaks into another mellow melody with a sort of African sounding beat. Again there are psychedelic lyrics with kind of a folk sound. Quite a melancholy song but strangely uplifting. Again professional production values show through. Track 4: Resurrection of Fern (live) (50,245) Like the other songs I have chosen to review here it's mellow and wonderfully chilled out. The lyrics are smooth and dreamy. I very much like this track Conclusion: With the three albums behind him in the US already I am sure Iron and Wine are on the cusp pretty big in there. I think it won't be long before he is pretty big in the UK too with his wonderful chilled out sound on his skilfully crafted tunes. Not to mention the well worked and creative lyrics! Score: 9/10 Like for like: If you like Wilco you will like Iron and Wine Myspace ![]() Foto:Emily Watson/Mit freundlicher Genehmigung von Sub Pop |
