Ein weiterer Konzertbericht unseres Popsecret UK-Agenten Ian.
The Pigeon Detectives Pete And The Pirates Hot Melts Brixton Academy Saturday 7th June 2008 Background It's been two years since I first saw The Pigeon Detectives at The O2 Wireless Festival in Hyde Park. They hail from Leeds and have been around since 2002 and since I first saw them I have seen them twice more and each time I have found them very entertaining. In that time they have released two albums to wide acclaim with the most recent, Emergency, being released only two weeks ago. I am looking forward to seeing them tonight in one of the UKs best venues. I don't know too much about tonight's other bands, but, I have at least heard of both of them. The Gig Brixton Academy is turning into a difficult place to get to, gone for now is the normal Victoria Line as a way of getting home from the venue and on many weekends including this one it is closed down all day. All this means it is a nightmare journey for me tonight getting off at Stockwell tube before dodging knives and bullets along Stockwell Road before I arrive unscathed. On entry I see the venue is already quite full and is indeed a sell out. The Sets Hot Melts Sadly because of tonights travel inconvenience I only catch one full song from The Hot Melts. The band is a four piece from Liverpool. The number I hear is punky and exciting. The singing from the band reminds me of the Small Faces. I will certainly have a listen to their MySpace music and check out their web site thehotmelts.com . Pete and The Pirates. Theses guys hail from Reading, just west of London. The line-up is Tommy Sanders (vocals), Peter Cattermoul (bass and vocals), David Thorpe (guitar), Johnny Sanders (drums) and Peter Hefferan (guitar and vocals). Their set kicks in with a very rocking sound, it reminds me, in style at least, of The Wombats. The second song of the set however is a little more melodious and reminds me more of The Who. Meanwhile the crowd are going mad, the last time I was at a gig with this kind of reaction it was for The Enemy supporting The Paddingtons at The Ulu a couple of years back. Their songs are short fast numbers which are jam packed full of great lyrics and enthusiasm. As soon as four songs into their set I have to say I am hooked. They seem to have a formidable catalogue of music already. I am interested to see how much they add to it over the next couple of years as they ascend the rock and roll ladder. I like the style of playing of this band I greatly enjoy the harmonies. They are certainly worthy of rushing down to the record store for or logging on to iTunes for. During the gig of the songs I catch the names of particular enjoy 'Mr Understanding and Knots as well as the song they close the set with, 'Come On Feet'. A tough act to follow! Great set 8/10 The Pigeon Detectives, The band arrive on stage proceeded by the playing of The Who's classic Baba O'Riley, and that was proceeded by a guy, who introduced himself as Richard having a debate with me on the correct spelling of Pigeon. When the band start playing they launch straight into the first track of their new album, Emergency, This Is An Emergency'. It is a catchy number and this is only the second time I have heard it and I am taken with it. They follow it up with a cracking rendition of debut album classic 'I Found Out'. The set continues with a mixture of older and new songs, as one would expect from a band touting a new album. The set is well structured with classics like 'Stop Or Go' and the new songs that are rousing and sound fantastic live. By the time they perform 'Romantic Type' even I am bouncing a little on my feet. As the set continues singer, Mat Bowman, jumps and runs more and more around the stage and gives his views in between songs. I enjoy the set, especially songs Romantic, I'm Not Sorry, I Can't Control Myself, Caught in Your Trap, Take Her Back. The set eventually comes to an end with anthemic I'm Not Sorry. As the band go off the crowd response is fantastic one of the best I have ever seen. Though everyone including myself is a little bemused when the house lights come on signalling no encore. However it was a very satisfying set. (Very good 8/10) Conclusion: This was a great night's entertainment and well worth the fraught journey that I had to endure to get here and the one home on the 345, magical mystery tour, bus that faces me. I am looking forward to listening to the new Pigeon Detectives album very much. I have to say I was very impressed by Pete and The Pirates too and I would like to hear more from the Melts. Verdict: Band 8/10 (audience 9/10) |
