Unser geschätzter Popsecret Agenten Ian schreibt über ein heisses Konzert im brodelnden London.
MGMT are a band who have been around a while but have only really come to the fore this year with their wonderful album ‘Oracular Spectacular’. They are in the running to become MySpace band of the year as well as being up for other awards. As for ‘A Place To Bury Strangers’ well I have no idea of what to expect from them as I have never even heard about them before. The Gig I did not visit The Forum at all last year but I have been here twice in the space of a couple of months this year. I have arrive in the venue a bit earlier than I would like and there are not a great many people here, however I believe it is sold out so I expect that by the time the headliners come on the place will be jam packed. The Sets A Place to Bury Strangers. The band appear on stage at around 8pm to more sporadic clapping than a round of applause. They are a five piece and are dressed in black. As they launch into their first track my ears are met by something more akin to what one would expect to here in rave club. Underneath all that they seem to have an electric sound. The acoustics for the band just sound wrong as though the bass is turned way up too high. Despite all of that there does seem to have something good underneath all of that banging. I would like to check them out online to see how they sound on record. At this point I notice now that they seem to be using a drum machine. The second song reminds me a little of something from Primal Scream’s ‘Xterminator’ album this also sounds as though there is too much bass. I would have to say on the whole the crowd don’t seem blown away by this music, not something so unusual for a support band. The same is true of the third song they play though this one seems to have bit of sixties sound hidden away in it. Later in the set the band, do seem to develop a relationship with the audience. There seems to be a bit of a gothic sound here and frankly I have to say it sounds a little out of place supporting MGMT. Towards the end the set the guitarist stopped short of smashing up his guitar. Their last song sounds OK if they just turned the banging down. In conclusion I would say this is not my cup of tea. 5/ 10 MGMT. The band arrives on stage dressed in Thanksgiving Day outfits in other words they look like pilgrims and Native Americans. They launch straight into their set which sounds great but the crowd seem a little subdued. The first song reminds me a little of Supergrass. For MGMT the sound balance seems perfect. When the second song 4th dimensional transition 4th dimensional transition ‘4th dimensional transition’ comes on it gets into an uproar. The music is sublime on the second and third songs which have greater energy. The set proceeds with really great guitar playing and wonderful singing which is reminiscent of that of David Bowie in the early days. Next comes the fantastic ‘Weekend Wars’ which really cuts everyone loose, causing everyone to jump up and down myself included. Then comes ‘The Youth’ which is followed by the wonderful ‘Time To Pretend’ which sends the crowd into further uproar, the band have a really wonderful electric sound that is almost unique in today’s industry. Without pausing to take a breath they launch straight into ‘Electric Feel’. The band is absolutely amazing tonight.’ Pieces of What’ sounds great. This barnstorming performance is brought to a close with the tuneful and psychedelic ‘Kids’ that really makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck. They go off to raptures applause. Encore. Great sounds ending this truly great set with ‘Future Reflections’ well worked guitar was on this one. The song is long and ends what has been a most enjoyable show. 9/10 Conclusion: A great night’s entertainment mainly from the headliners. I leave buzzing with electricity finding the time to pretend that it is not raining on me as well as the kids and the youth in this cold London night. |
