It’s nine years since I was last at Wembley stadium. Since then the whole place has been knocked down and rebuilt gone are the famous twin towers, replaced with the giant arch. The reason I was there then was to see Oasis play a sell out concert. The support on that day was top draw, including the likes of Doves and The Happy Mondays. Oasis played a great gig on what had been a perfect summer’s day despite Liam being hungover from the night before.
Today I will again be seeing Oasis and the support line up is if anything better coming from a re-emerging Kasabian a hungry Enemy and new comers Reverend and The Makers who I hope to catch if I make it on time (As I write this I am stuck on the tube). Oasis have been about for a long time now and are masters of the stadium show. Kasabian have just released their third album and are about to headline a nationwidet our later this year. The Enemy have just toured with their second album and have come along way since I saw them supporting the Paddingtons at The ULU in London. I don’t know much about the Reverend And The Makers but I am looking forward to seeing them as I have heard lots of good things. Just have to get there now. When I finally arrive at my seat in the stadium I am more than happy with the view, even though I am close to the back of the venue and high up.However I am sitting down and out for the poring rain. It was easy to get up to my seat as there was moving stairs almost all the way up. I am pleased to hear the sound is great too. The first thing I discover on arrival is The Enemy won’t be playing due to illness. However they say The Reverend and the Makers and Kasabian will play longer sets to make up for it.Reverend and the Makers I have missed the first couple of minutes of the band who are a six piece from Sheffield. Their music seems to slot in nicely with tonight’s other bands, playing guitar based rock and roll. Like Kasabian they like to use a fair amount of distortion in their tunes. After hearing just a couple of songs I am hooked. I would certainly like to hear their album and maybe see them again. They have a great fusion of influences in their sound. They are very well received by the crowd which is a real achievement for a band third on the bill trying to cover for The Enemy. Ones to watch! Kasabian: The last time I saw Kasabian was in Hyde Park at The O2 Festival a few years ago, much has changed for them since then. They now boast a huge fan base much of which they share with Oasis. They also have three hit albums under their belt. They arrive on stage to rapturous applause and launch straight into their set. They sound great, 2nd album hit ‘Shoot The Runner’ sounds well rehearsed and tight, if anything better than the record. By the time they play ‘Cut Off’ the venue is rocking. When I hear ‘Processed Beats’ the years are stripped away and I remember what it was that first excited me about this band.Their new stuff sounds good too. Forthcoming single ‘Where Did All The Love Go’ is real balls out rock. ‘Fire’ has real energy. Broken Beats sounds like vintage stuff. They top off what has been a brilliant set with ‘ClubFoot’. That band has absolutely rocked tonight. They are worth the money alone! Old masters reborn. Oasis: Before the band appear the crowd are warmed up with tracks from The Stone Roses, The Beatles, The Sex Pistols and The Stones piped through the Stadium’s PA system. Then the stage lights start flashing and the familiar sound of ‘Fuckin’ in The Bushes’ greets our ears. When Liam and the others take to the stage the assembled masses are nothing less than hysterical. The set proper starts with a rocking performance of the classic ‘Rock and Roll Star’ this promises to be a fantastic show. Next comes their last album’s hit song Lyla that is revved up with passion. New album opener ‘The Shock of the Lighting is powerful and exciting. Next we are treated to a couple of classics from the past with ‘Cigarettes and Alcohol’ and ‘Roll With It’, which sounds like it, did before all the hype of their battle with Blur. The Gem archer penned ‘To Be Where There’s Life’ and ‘The Rapture’ from the new album both show a healthy maturity in their song writing. Next comes the Noel fronted classic Masterplan, which is just brilliant. Liam comes back on stage to dedicate ‘Songbird’ to his wife Nicole Appleton. After that Liam takes his traditional swipe at Robbie Williams commenting that he heard Take That had an elephant at their gig and he didn’t realise they had let Williams back in the band. Another one of their classic b-side is next with the heart felt “Slide away’. ‘Morning Glory’ gets going the crowd again under the pouring rain.‘My Big mouth’ is a rare appearance of a song from the ‘Be Hear Now’ album. The bands playing tonight is first rate, aided by new drummer Chris Sharrock and concert regular and former Kula Shaker member Jay Darlington who Noel introduces as Jesus. Noel dedicates ‘The Importance of Being Idle’ to the ‘sick’ Tom from the Enemy and comments that he would like a sick note from his mum.Noel’s voice is first rate tonight as he shows again on Half The World Away’ which sounds soulful. Liam is back for the next one, which is my favourite from the new album, ‘Out Of Time’ I think this is the best thing Liam has ever written and he sings it beautifully . Eventually comes fan favourite Wonderwall, introduced as ‘one you might know’ with the light from mobile phone screens taking over from lighters during this classic tune. The band ends the set with first album favourites Live Forever and Supersonic. The band go off but soon Noel is back to play the tune of ‘Don’t Look back in Anger’ but lets the crowd sing, only stepping in right at the end to correct the bit the crowd always get wrong. This is followed by another one from the ‘Dig Out Your Soul’ album in the shape of ‘Falling Down’ before Liam comes back on to sing ‘Champaign Supernova’ which I have to admit left me a little choked up. Last of all there was a return to ‘I am The Walrus’ which is the perfect end to what I would say was a perfect set . A brilliant show, can’t wait to see them again! Conclusion:A really great show all in all. It would have been nice to see The Enemy again but the other support bands more than made up for their absence. The rain did nothing to suppress the buoyant atmosphere and great music. I just have to make my way through the rain to the tube now but who cares about that when you have just seen a gig like that!
